Family flame

There’s nothing better than cooking outdoors with my kids – especially on the Big Green Egg. It’s the perfect way to unwind, eat well and make memories together. Learning to cook over fire is one of the best ways for children to understand heat, timing and flavour. It’s hands-on, it’s exciting, and it feels like a mini camping trip every time we fire it up. We get fresh air, a break from screens, and a chance to bond over food. Honestly, the mood is always better outside!

Favourite family dishes

1. Smoky mac ‘n’ cheese

We give this classic a bit of a twist with smoked cheddar and a breadcrumb topping that crisps up beautifully in a cast iron dish. It’s cheesy, comforting and always a hit with my crew. The kids love helping me sprinkle the cheese and stir the sauce.

2. Build-your-own skewers

A brilliant one for getting kids involved. Set out bowls of mushrooms, peppers, pineapple, halloumi, cherry tomatoes, and whatever else you fancy. Everyone gets to assemble their own skewer. It’s creative, colourful and encourages picky eaters to try something new.

3. Skillet cookies

For dessert, we bake big cookies in a skillet – crispy edges, gooey middle. Serve it up warm with a scoop of ice cream and you’ve got smiles all round. It’s a proper treat and super easy to prep together.

Top tips for the summer holidays

1. Turn cooking into an activity

Give kids small safe jobs: mixing, basting, seasoning or arranging food. Keeps them engaged and teaches independence.

2. Plan themed cookouts

Think taco night, pizza on the EGG, or a garden picnic with barbecue bits.

3. Use the EGG as your outdoor classroom

Teach them about heat control, where food comes from, and respecting the fire.

4. Keep things flexible

Kids love having a choice, so offer toppings, sides or extras they can pick from to make meals their own.
