How to Load & Light with the EGGniter
Main content
Getting started
The Big Green Egg is probably the easiest charcoal barbecue to get going but if you want to make your life even easier, particularly in cold winter months, then the EGGniter is the accessory for you.
Pour the charcoal
Add the charcoal to your Big Green Egg. Stop pouring when it reaches 5cm below the rim of the Fire Ring. This will provide the right amount of clearance beneath your cooking surfaces.
Fire up the EGGniter
Make sure that your EGGniter is filled with gas. Slide the Safety Lock off while pressing the Ignition button. For a constant flame, press the Ignition and Hold buttons at the same time. Point the flame at a piece of charcoal and hold. Don’t be tempted to rest it directly in the charcoal or leave it unattended, as this isn’t safe and can damage the EGGniter.
Blow air across the co
Once you achieve white embers, press the Air Blower and Hold buttons simultaneously. Blow air onto the lit charcoal for a few minutes. When are you satisfied that you have got a good fire going, press the Air Blower button again to turn it off.
Allow the temperature to build
Close the Dome for 10 minutes to allow the internal temperature to build. Keep both vents fully open.
Put in your surfaces
When the EGG’s ceramics start to feel hot to the touch and the thermometer is 10°C away from your recipe’s target temperature, it’s time to put in your chosen cooking surfaces.
Whether you’re adding your ConvEGGtor and Stainless Steel Grid for indirect cooking or a Cast Iron Searing Grid for grilling, your temperature will drop slightly. Don’t worry: the temperature will come back up.
Once the target temperature is reached, begin to adjust the Draft Door and rEGGulator in tandem. Make these adjustments in small increments for precision. Once the temperature has stopped fluctuating, you’re ready to cook!
